Our limeade is spicy on two different levels. First, it has a nice kick thanks to the fresh ginger. We make a fresh ginger syrup that has amazing flavor and zing. The next level of heat comes from the chopped jalapeno that we mix into the limeade. Jalapeno pieces not only add some serious heat, but they also give the drink some texture. Imagine drinking a refreshing limeade and then crunching into a hot jalapeno at the same time. It is pretty delicious- you must give it a try.

Of course, you want to have a nice balance between spicy and sweet. To make our drink a little less hot, we add honey and also brown sugar. The honey gives the limeade a nice earthy sweetness and the brown sugar adds a molasses taste that can’t be beat. As you can see, this is a drink recipe that you need to try. It has it all- sweet, spice and refreshing lime. It’s just perfect.

Prep time

  • 3 cups water

  • ¼ cup fresh grated ginger root

  • ½ cup dark brown sugar

  • ½ cup honey

  • 1 ½ cups fresh lime juice

  • 2 Tbsp fresh chopped jalapeno, seeds removed

  • 4 cups sparkling water

  • Ice

  • Lime wedges

  • 1 tbsp extra grated ginger

  • 2 Tbsp Sugar in the Raw

  • Add the water to a small sauce pan along with the ¼ cup grated ginger. Bring the mix to a boil, lower the heat to a simmer and cover the pan. Let the mix simmer for about 5 minutes then turn off the heat and let the ginger seep into the tea for 10 more minutes. Strain the liquid and discard the strained ginger.
  • Add the brown sugar and hone to the ginger juice and stir to dissolve the sugar.
  • Add the lime juice and chopped jalapeno to the juice and stir.
  • Chill the limeade for at least 4 hours in the fridge or until completely cool.
  • Mix the sugar in the raw and extra ginger in a small dish.
  • When you are ready to enjoy the spicy limeade, run a lime wedge around a tall glass.
  • Dip the glass into the sugar and ginger mix to rim the glass.
  • Fill the glass with ice and then add 1 cup of the ginger limeade to the glass. Top with the sparkling water and enjoy cold.

Tips and Tricks

  • • Skip the sparkling water and just fill the glass with pure limeade for a non carbonated version.
    • Skip the jalapeno if you’d like the limeade to be a little less spic. It will still have a great kick from the ginger.
  • Tools:
    • Saucepan
    • Strainer
    • Pitcher or bowl
    • Small bowl or rimmer
