What is a Mai Tai?
A Mai Tai is a classic tropical drink that is usually made with rum, orange liquor, almond syrup, pineapple juice, lime juice and grenadine. The name “Mai Tai” stems from the Tahitian word maita’i which means “excellence”. It is the perfect name because this drink is incredible!
Mai Tais are typically served in tropical locations. The bright, fruity flavors are perfect to enjoy on the beach. Of course, we don’t want any rum or alcohol in our glasses. We created a virgin mai tai recipe that you are going to adore.
Non Alcoholic Mai Tai Ingredients
If we skipped the rum and liquor in the mai tai, what did we use instead? We blended together an amazing mix of drinks that will create a sunset in your glass. Here are the mai tai ingredients we use to make a tasty mocktail:
- Orange juice- Use fresh squeezed orange juice if possible. Pulp free works the best.
- Pineapple juice- Canned pineapple juice works perfectly
- Lemon juice- Fresh squeezed lemon juice is best for a vibrant flavor
- Lime juice- Squeeze some fresh limes too!
- Grenadine- Grenadine is a bright red, cherry syrup that sweetens the drink and also adds flavor.
- Lime seltzer- A little bit of fizz is great in a virgin mai tai punch.
Doesn’t this all sound delicious? Well, it is! You should start shopping for these ingredients right now!
How to Make a Mai Tai
Our mai tai mocktail recipe is actually made in two steps. The first step involves mixing all the juices together. You can keep the juice mix in a pitcher in the fridge so it is ready to use anytime you crave a fresh mai tai.
The second step of our mai tai recipe is to fill a glass with ice, fill the glass half way with the juice mix then top the drink with a little grenadine and some seltzer. Add a pretty garnish like an orange slice, cherry and a fresh pineapple wedge. The drink is so pretty that you are going to need to take a sip right away!
Since the drink is made in two steps, you can mix enough of the juice to make 8 drinks and keep it on hand. Make one drink at a time, adding the remaining ingredients whenever you are craving a mai tai. You can also simply mix everything together in a big punch bowl and serve it right away. So many options for this delicious mocktail recipe!
